Moving forward toward self-sufficiency since 2005
A critical pivot occurred in 2017 when, in the face of the extremely high unemployment rate in the community and the resultant widespread hunger, the organisation recognised a high number of medication defaulters–people who could not take life sustaining medicine on an empty stomach.
This urgent need resulted in the implementation of a nutrition-feeding scheme that provides hot meals to over two hundred community members daily (cooking twice weekly due to financial constraints) and distributing food parcels to vulnerable families, even the ones from abled families. Furthermore, the organization actively collects and donates essential items such as sanitary towels, school shoes, and clothing to the Nelson Mandela metro.
Complementing their mission, SiyaPhambili also fosters community spirit and talent through sports activities (like rugby and soccer, garnering support from the Siya Kolisi Foundation) and an annual Christmas party (now serving 130 children), embodying its name by helping its community move forward toward self-sufficiency and full participation. The organisation has a number of volunteers, which are decreasing in number due to the organisation not being able to pay any more stipends, the organisation has a dedicated admin person and a chairperson.
